I Am Your Flag

By Chase Tunbridge.
A photo of the American flag. It has red and white stripes, with a blue square in the top-left corner, covered with stars. Fireworks light the sky in the background.
I am the flag of the United States of America. I belong to every American. Several children stand in a playground holding American flags.
I was born June 14, 1777, in Philadelphia. A very old picture shows the first flag. It has only thirteen stars!
You celebrate my birthday every year, on Flag Day. A row of flags wave in front of homes on a street.
When I was young I had 13 white stars, one for each of the first 13 colonies, in a field of blue. The color blue stands for the union of the 13 states. A map shows the 13 original US colonies next to the flag with 13 stars. The stars are arranged in a circle.
Today I have 50 stars! One star for each state in the union. I have grown with our nation. Another map shows all 50 states next to a flag with 50 stars. The stars are spread evenly across the blue square.
My red stripes stand for courage. Soldiers row a boat on a stormy sea. Two of them hold up a flag.
My white stripes stand for liberty. The statue of liberty holds a torch up high!
I love to fly. You'll see me outside of your school and the post office. The flag waves on flag poles outside many buildings.
I am here to remind you of your freedom. A group of children hold their hands over their hearts.
I am a symbol of the people of the United States of America. I am your flag.
