The Woman Runner: An ancient Greek myth

Retold by Starfall. Illustrated by Jing Lili. Animated by Jing Lili.
A drawing of a woman running in traditional Greek clothing and modern running shoes.
Atalanta was the most beautiful woman in Greece. Many men wanted to marry her, but she always said, "No!" Three men stand near Atalanta, placing their hands over their hearts. She shakes her head and walks away.
Atalanta wanted to be a runner, not a wife. She practiced running every day. Soon she was faster than every other woman AND man in Greece. Atalanta runs through the city.
A prince saw Atalanta running and fell in love with her. But when he asked her to marry him, Atalanta said, "No!" The prince looks surprised as Atalanta runs by.
The prince followed Atalanta everywhere.

"Will you marry me?" He asked her again and again. How could Atalanta get him to stop bothering her?
The prince tries to run with Atalanta, but she is too fast!
Atalanta had an idea. "I will marry you if you can beat me in a running race." The prince kneels in front of Atalanta. She points as she speaks, then continues running.
The prince could not run faster than Atalanta. He asked the goddess of love for help. The goddess gave him three golden apples and said, "These apples will help you win the race." The goddess magically appears in front of the prince. She holds up her hand, and the apples appear, too!
A large crowd gathered to watch the race. The crowd shouted, "On your mark get set, go!"

Atalanta sprinted away leaving the prince in the dust. But the prince smiled. He knew just what to do.
Atalanta and the prince begin to run. The prince has the golden apples in a sack.
The prince rolled a golden apple in front of Atalanta. When Atalanta stopped to pick it up, he raced ahead. The prince smiles as he passes Atalanta.
Each time Atalanta ran ahead of the prince, he rolled a golden apple in front of her. Each time Atalanta stopped to pick it up, the prince ran ahead. Atalanta catches up, and wins the race!
Sadly, the prince couldn't win the race, even with the golden apples.

"Will you marry me anyway?" asked the prince.

Atalanta said, "Maybe. I'll think about it."

The End.
The prince puts his hands over his heart. She nods and walks away.
